Olympic Flame Visit Schedule
The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor is very pleased that the Olympic Flame will be here this Saturday, November 14. The Town, in partnership with several community groups, will hold various events to celebrate this historic visit. On Friday evening (November 13) at 7pm, the Sparkling Blades Figure Skating Club will host a skating show at the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium. Admission price is $15.00. Guest skaters include Vaugh Chipeur, a member of the Canadian National team, and Matthew and Alexandra Young of Corner Brook, who finished 5th at the Junior Nationals. Guest Appearances by: Celtic Spirit Dancers and Lesley Oakes School of Dance. On Saturday afternoon, the Special Olympics Association will hold a bowling tournament at Holiday Lanes.
On Saturday, the flame will begin it's journey at the Town Hall. From there it will move on to Church Road, onto Lincoln Road and then turn left on to Cromer Avenue and then Community Torchbearer Tony Kyritsis will carry it onto Centennial Field at approximatley 7pm.
Centennial Field will host the flame, with ceremonies beginning at 6pm. (see attached Run of Show-schedule). There will be various entertainers including Terry Burke and Mike Snelgrove, who will rev up the crowd, and speeches from Federal Minister of State (Sport) Gary Lunn, Minister Susan Sullivan, and Mayor Al Hawkins. The Millcrest Academy Choir will also perform. At the conclusion of the event, at approximatley 8pm, a giant fireworks display will take place at Centennial Field.
On Sunday morning at approximatley 7am, the flame will leave Grand Falls-Windsor from the Town Hall. A minor hockey jamboree will be held at the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium at 8:30 and at 12:30pm, the mayor and our Community Torch Bearer, Tony Kyritsis, will participate in a brief closing ceremonies at the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium.
When the flame leaves Grand Falls-Windsor on Sunday morning at approximatley 7am, it will leave from the Town Hall on High Street and proceed over to Mill Road and turn right on Scott Avenue. It will then move up Carmelite Road, up onto Lincoln Road, and then turn right onto Cromer Avenue. It will then turn on the overpass by Exit 18B and then proceed West onto its next destination, Badger.
