The province of Newfoundland and Labrador is connected with the rest of the world by land, sea and air transportation. Labrador is connected to mainland Canada and separate from Newfoundland. Newfoundland is the home of the province’s capital city, St. John’s and is situated in the Atlantic Ocean with connection by sea and air transportation.
Ferry Services
Newfoundland and Labrador offers several ferry services which connect the island portion of Newfoundland to Labrador and mainland Canada. The Marine Atlantic provides all season passenger and vehicle ferry service from Newfoundland to Nova Scotia. Individuals can board the ferry by either of two routes. The first route is a year-round 96 nautical mile daily ferry between Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador and North Sydney, Nova Scotia. The second route is a 280 nautical mile tri-weekly ferry service that runs between Argentia, Newfoundland and Labrador and North Sydney, Nova Scotia. This route is only available between Mid-June until late September (Marine Atlantic Inc).
Marine Atlantic’s mission is to provide safe, environmentally responsible, and quality ferry service between the island of Newfoundland and the Province of Nova Scotia in a reliable, courteous and cost-effective manner (Marine Atlantic Inc).
Marine Atlantic determines the cost of using their ferry services depending on the number of passengers, the age of the passengers, if you are traveling in a group, day cruise rates, the size of the vehicle and accommodations (optional). Most people make reservations in advance to ensure seating is available. All rates are based on one-way transportation and can be paid by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club/En Route and debit cards. Marine Atlantic does not accept personal cheques. To view additional information about Marine Atlantic rates and schedules, visit http://www.marine-tlantic.ca/en/rates/rates.shtml.
