Newfoundland Food
There is no better way to experience Newfoundland than by sampling the province’s traditional food, and there are some delicious and interesting items on the menu. If you have never had a good old Newfoundland scoff, you’re in for an unforgettable experience.
Newfoundlanders are well known for their cooking abilities and serving up a variety of dishes as interesting as the land. Newfoundland prepares its dishes with the freshest ingredients from their oceans, lakes, rivers, game, plants and gardens. Lobster, Cod, Caribou, Salmon, Moose can all be served up as tasty recipes that have been used for generations.
Some of these famous Newfoundland items include colcannon, doughboys, pea soup, salt fish and brewis, toutons, and cod tongues. Many Newfoundlanders enjoy dishes including delicious Jigg’s dinner which is made up of beef stew, cabbage, turnip and potatoes followed by Figgy Duff pudding as a desert. Newfoundland and Labrador’s cuisines include Salmon Ravioli, Braised Rabbit Pie, Caribou Bourguignon, and Bakeapple Cheesecake.
Food in Grand Falls-Windsor
A lot of Newfoundland traditional foods can be found in Grand Falls-Windsor at the numerous restaurants located in this community. Grand Falls-Windsor has restaurants offering food from ethnic backgrounds including Mexican, Chinese, Italian, Canadian and Greek. Grand Falls-Windsor has many credited restaurants that have been highly recognized through various awards. Breakfast - Valley Restaurant was voted second place in Newfoundland and Labrador for the best breakfast eating.
Buffett - Cooking up second-place finish in the province was King City.
Chinese - Food including almond guy ding, sweet and sour chicken balls, honey
Garlic ribs, fried rice, spring rolls, egg rolls, beef and broccoli, wonton soup, crispy wontons and fortune cookies-First Place Honors were presented to Taiwan.
Fine Restaurant - In 2002, voters made Baird’s Restaurant their number one destination off the Avalon.
Fish and Chips - Baird’s Restaurant takes second-place ribbon with voters having a fresh taste of the sea.
Hamburger - When you are in the mood for a ultimate burger experience, head to Hiscocks in Grand Falls-Windsor which finished in third-place in 2002.
Newfoundland Scoff - Newfoundlanders love Jiggs Dinner which consists of cooking together potatoes, turnip, carrots, cabbage, peas pudding and salt beef or riblets. The Best of winner in Grand Falls-Windsor was Baird’s Restaurant-finished in second place.
Sunday Brunch - Serving Sunday brunch is very common in Newfoundland and Labrador. The provincial magazine, The Herald, conducted a survey for readers to complete. The results concluded that Baird’s in Grand Falls-Windsor be awarded third-place for the spot to go for Sunday Brunch (The Newfoundland Herald).
